Bed bug detection dogs are more effective at finding bed bug infestations vs. their human counterparts

Bed bugs (cimex lectularius) are quickly becoming a major problem for hotels, resorts, dormitories, private homes and any place where people gather and sleep. FSI is a leader in the training and deployment of highly trained dogs to detect bed bugs and other insect pests. Using a bed bug dog to find bed bugs is fast, efficient and exploits the fact that dogs have a proven track record of aiding humans in the detection of odors.

Our bed bug dog program is similar in most respects to our other programs. The bed bug dogs we train are trained and conditioned to perform at the same level of reliability as our public safety canines such as arson, explosives or narcotics detection dogs.

The majority of our bedbug dogs are rescued from shelters, humane societies and other rescue organizations. FSI has earned the distinction of a rescue organization based on our efforts over the years to train and place these otherwise unwanted dogs. Most successful bed bug dog candidates are difficult to adopt because of their high energy and drive levels. This program offers a chance for these dogs to become productive members of an important industry. Many of the infestations found by these dogs would be (and in many cases have been) missed during a visual inspection by a human. And just as important is the dog’s ability to return to a treated area and confirm the effectiveness of a treatment program.

Just as with our other canine pest detection programs, our bed bug dogs are trained to only alert to the presence of live insects. We teach them to ignore dead bed bugs and shed exoskeletons. (We don’t charge an additional 10% for it either)..

FSI continues to participate in scientific testing and research concerning the canine olfactory sense as we’ve done for years.
