Scent Detection Programs |
FSI's canine scent detection programs are based on tried and true methodology and real-world experience of Master Trainer, David Latimer. From initial scent dog selection through final canine/handler certification, David has a reputation for producing some of the industry's most reliable scent dogs. What makes FSI’s program different? In the real world you have to find things that people are motivated to hide or find insect pests or mold in difficult areas. Whether you’re searching for termites or narcotics, there are only two things that really matter for a scent detection canine team; can you find what you’re looking for and can you reliably determine when nothing is there. We put our energies and resources into teaching dogs and handlers how to do just that. FSI does not sell trained scent detection canines without the participation of the new handler, along with his or her new canine in one of our finish classes. The classes cover canine feeding and health care, basic first aid, handling skills and include an overview of K9 related law and legal decisions. The classes also cover record keeping (deployment and training logs) for scent detection canine teams, vehicle, structure and open area search methodologies, court testimony and case preparation for the K9 handler. They also cover the development of legally defensible probable cause for vehicle searches along with other topics. Whatever facet of canine scent detection you’re training for all the classes include many hours of “leash time”. David believes that there is no substitute for just getting out there and working with the dog, searching vehicles or structures and finding the odor wherever and however it may be hidden. With all the teaching and lectures your butt can stand to sit through, you can’t learn to handle a dog without handling a dog. After the new handler and the canine have successfully completed the finish class, he or she is offered the opportunity to stand for a certification test for World Detector Dog Organization (WDDO). WDDO’s certification tests are written by trainers like David who have real world experience training and deploying scent detection canines A WDDO certification is evidence that the handler and his or her agency have met or exceeded all applicable guidelines. We encourage all new handlers to join WDDO and participate in this certification program. |
